The town of West Hartford was incorporated in 1854. It is a large suburban community with all the cultural and commercial amenities of a metropolitan center and yet still has the charms of a small town. A wealth of diverse lifestyle possibilities and recreational and social activities make West Hartford an excellent choice for enjoyable family living.
An array of neighborhoods features some of the loveliest homes in Connecticut. Large stately houses, charming colonials, turn of the century Victorians, quaint capes, single story ranches, bungalows and impressive contemporaries dot the landscape and grace the tree-lined avenues of town. A variety of apartment complexes, condominium communities and pleasant multi-families are also found in town.

West Hartford also has a thriving business, and downtown (called West Hartford Center) centered around Farmington Avenue and South/North Main Street. The Westfarms Mall is located on West Hartford's western border with Farmington. Interstate 84 passes through the south part of town. In West Hartford Center shoppers and dinners delight with a selection of shops, boutiques and top-notch restaurants. Bishops Corner, Corbins Corner, West Farms Mall and neighborhood establishments provide plenty of commercial activity.

Education and cultural enrichment are important aspects of life in West Hartford. A large public school system, which is highly rated, includes eleven elementary schools, the middle schools and two high schools. A strong academic curriculum is facilitated by modern buildings and state of the art equipment, and is complemented by advanced placement programs, special education and an extensive continuing education program. Private education, day care and nursery schools are also available.
Higher education is also well represented. Within short drives extending from West Farms Mall, one of the largest malls in the U.S., to the adopted area of the West End of Hartford, the center is conveniently situated between the University of Hartford, West Hartford’s Campus of The University of Connecticut, St. Joseph College, the Hartt School of Music, the Hartford Seminary, Trinity College, the Watkinson and Kingswood-Oxford schools and the renowned American School for the Deaf
Numerous civic and social organizations, including an active community center, promote quality of life in town. The department of leisure services maintains excellent facilities for indoor and outdoor recreation, including beautiful parks in virtually every neighborhood, a skating rink and an aquatic center. The unspoiled lands of the West Hartford Reservoir provide dense forests and lovely trails for the nature lover and mountain biker.
The home of Noah Webster, author of America's first comprehensive dictionary, is a well-preserved museum, and the West Hartford Art League offers classes and exhibits at the Saltbox Gallery. The Children's Museum of Connecticut features the state's largest planetarium, nature exhibits with live animals, an aquarium and laser light shows.
Additionally, it are in close proximity to some of our nation's most well known historical sites such as the museums and homes of Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Other well known sites include the Old State House and the oldest museum in the country, the Wadsworth Atheneum, as well as the ScienceCenter and Gengras Planetarium.
